COMPOST
Composting is one of the best ways to recycle and reduce waste. It is
good for the environment and is a generally healthy option to take.
This is because :-
- It recycles waste
- Reduces landfill pollution
- Discourages trips to the tip
- Enriches soil and wildlife
- Cuts down on bonfires
Compost is odourless and improves soil structure due to its
nutrients. It relies on its living organisms to break down waste,
which is done by bacteria, fungi and algae.
Inside a compost heap the organisms feed on ingredients like grass
cuttings. As the number of organisms increase decomposition sets in
and produces heat. This heat kills all possible diseased material and
as it cools various small animals move in to digest the other
materials. Original materials are broken down and mixed together,
producing a rich and healthy fertiliser.
Three Steps To Composting:
Feed your bin equal amounts of greens (vegetables, wet grass
clippings, coffee + filters, etc.) and browns (leaves, dry grass
clippings, hardwood ash, etc.). Leave out meat and dairy products.
Keep your moisture level to that of a wrung - out sponge.
Add air to your compost every 2 - 3 weeks with a broom handle
or by turning.
Solutions:
Problem | Probable Cause | Solution |
Bad odour | Too many greens | Add browns and mix.
Turn pile, top with soil. |
Smells like rotten
eggs | Not enough air | Turn pile frequently.
Top with soil. |
Pile not composting | Too dry | Add water. |
Flies around pile | Exposed food | Top with soil. |
Attracts animals | Exposed food
or wrong items | Remove any meats +
dairy. Top with soil. |
